Accommodation & day visits

If you’re looking for accommodation, our heritage-listed 1897 telegraph station is available for booking but must be reserved in advance. Please note that camping is not permitted once you leave the highway.

Overnight guests

The observatory accommodates up to eight overnight guests. Because of our limited facilities, to avoid disappointment, advance bookings for overnight stays and meals are essential.

Accommodation in the historic Old Telegraph Building is basic with shared bathroom and toilet facilities. There are three bedrooms, one with a double bed and bunks, one with a double bed and two singles, and one with two singles and bunks.

Guests should note:

  • Bookings are essential. Please contact the caretakers
  • Up to a total eight guests can stay on any one night
  • You will need to bring your own bed linen, i.e. sleeping bag, sheets, personal pillows, pillowslips, towels; as well as all other linens, etc. 
  • Our water supply is limited as we rely on rainwater tanks. There are no laundry facilities available.
  • There is one shared bathroom with solar heated water for showers.
  • There is one compostable toilet.
  • Three meals per day are included in the cost of the booking, however, should you have special dietry needs please discuss this at the time of your booking and bring any essential supplies with you. We can usually provide a vegetarian option but not more specific needs. We are very remote and get our supplies weekly from Norseman – 500kms away, with very limited choices.

By prior arrangement, a pickup and drop-off service to the observatory is offered by the caretakers for guests with accommodation bookings , staying for 2 nights or more, who do not have 4WD vehicles and are leaving 2WD vehicles etc., at the lookout .

There are stipulated pick-up times from the lookout. These are 8.30 am and 3.30 pm. Please always check with the caretakers the night before so you can be there at the correct time.

Visitors will also be dropped back to the lookout at these times.


Advance booking is essential for overnight stays.

However, please remember to call the night before your arrival to confirm your pickup time with the caretakers.


Prices for Accommodation

All prices include GST (Effective 1 March 2025)

Adults: $135 per person per night

Children (4-14 years): $60 per person per night

Discount of $5 p/n for accommodation for BirdLife Australia members and seniors card holders. Please show your card.


There is no discount of any kind on courses.


Day Visits

Visit Eyre Bird Observatory any day between 10 am to 4 pm to indulge in various activities, including bird watching, museum visits, beach exploration, bushwalks, and unwinding on one of our many verandahs.

$15/vehicle

Morning or afternoon tea may be available if the caretakers are not too busy. $10 per person

Payments can be made by credit card (Visa/MasterCard).

Eyre Bird Observatory is a not-for-profit facility, with the fees directed to cover our running cost.

Fees for courses cover transport within the nature reserve for course outings, tuition by experienced leaders, accommodation in shared rooms, and hearty meals!
